HOSHINKAN JUTAIJUTSU: ART OF THE ENLIGHTENED WARRIOR

“The society that separates its scholars from its warriors will have its thinking done by cowards, and its fighting done by fools.”    - Thucydides

Hoshinkan jutaijutsu is the art of the enlightened warrior. An enlightened warrior is a courageous individual who wilfully chooses a life of service and sacrifice; training diligently in the martial, movement and mind sciences, so that they, their family, friends and communities may be safe and secure, enjoy healthy relationships and live active, productive, adventurous lives.

The term jutaijutsu is synonymous with the similar and more common terms -  jujutsu and jiu jitsu. Historically, jutaijutsu was a comprehensive and highly-effective martial art developed and utilized by Japan’s samurai and ninja warrior-elite. The original jutaijutsu systems were comprised of strikes, throws, joint locks and dislocations, chokes, ground controls and defences against all manner of empty-hand and armed attacks. Some systems also included stick, staff, knife, sword, chain, spear and halberd fighting techniques.

Hoshinkan Jutaijutsu is a contemporary expression of this ancient and revered warrior tradition. Its roots run deep in the fertile soil of Japanese bujutsu (ancient warrior traditions), but Hoshinkan Jutaijutsu is a living and constantly evolving art that integrates proven techniques, tactics and technologies from a variety of sources – eastern and western, traditional and contemporary. This progressive, eclectic approach ensures that the system will remain thoroughly relevent - and potent – in today’s high-tech, fast-paced and rapidly changing world.

As it is practiced today, Hoshinkan Jutaijutsu encompasses the following skill-sets:

   * Breathing, meditation and visualization techniques;

   * Personal, situational, environmental and global awareness;

   * Conflict psycology and physiology;

   * Threat-assessment, avoidance, escape and evasion;

   * Interpersonal and tactical communication;

   * Functional fitness and athletic conditioning;

   * Tactical posturing, positioning and movement;

   * Striking and strike-defence skills;

   * Escapes from chokes, holds and other common attacks;

   * Throws, takedowns and jointlocks;

   * Ground Controls – ie. positions, transitions and submissions;

   * Impact, edged, ballistic and flexible weapons.
